At least that’s the claim that EA and Dice have made regarding their upcoming patch v1.03. This patch is to repair some 140 problems with the game and current patch. The main one that we are all hoping for (or praying for) is an end to the “Point-Farming” and Chopper Whoring.
Slated for August 2005, EA’s new patch will end/address Chopper/Supply Whoring/Exploiting. Offical Patch info
I for one am hopeful that EA will stop the point farming yet retain the incentive to heal and repair teammates. Gratuitous mining or ammo tossing has to stop, that’s a given. But what will they do about the choppers and engineers?
I agree that rearming teammates while in the chopper is a great asset, but how are they to stop the point farming?? I don’t see how they can stop it while retaining the functionality they seem to have wanted. Lets quickly go over some of the ways I know of to point farm, (some are tested, some are theory).
Chopper Whoring Exploiter (6 guys – see other articles) Exploit/Farming = points for rearming teammates that are constantly throwing mines or other things out the ship so a support class can get re-supply points is a clear exploit (hope EA missed it is beyond me, but that’s another story)
Smash up derby (both sides play together any number of players) Exploit/Farming = Everybody in a vehicles, everybody engineers. All sit facing each other in a circle and keep it floored, peddle to the medal (LOL). If everyone is engineer and everyone is damaging each other and healing team mates. Not too fun but there is no “F” in Exploit.
Knife/Pistol and Medic (2 on one team one on the other) Exploit/Farming = Knife/Shoot a friendly enemy, his teammate revives him. Then switch positions (the medics switch so that they take turns getting the revive points). You get the badge of the Exploiter here, the Pistol and Knife Badges. Both of these awards are signs of an exploiter in my humble opinion. (especially silver or gold badges)
There are more, and I’m sure EA will introduce a few new ones with v1.03 patch. Lets just hope the plug the worst of the known ones this time around.
The real issue for me is where to draw the line on exploitive behavior.
Here is one definition of Exploit in relation to computers, not completely in tune with the gaming reference, but close enough for me. “An exploit is a common term in the computer security community to refer to a piece of software that takes advantage of a bug, glitch or vulnerability, leading to privilege escalation or denial of service on a computer system.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploit_(computer_security)
Now, what is a bug, glitch, or vulnerability? Some are obvious other are less so.
Take Battlefield 1942 for example, now that it’s an old game I’ll let the cat out the bag to the biggest bug that virtually all smart players exploited in the game if you ask me; the infamous “point of view error”. The basic bug here is that all shots as infantry originate from the belly button, not the gun barrel. Also the 1st person view you get is from the belly, so all you sneaky guys and snipers that wondered how the heck you were spotted I can tell you, it’s that your body hangs ½ way out when you think your are totally concealed. Now since EA never fixed this bug, and since knowing it existed forced you to exploit, or use the knowledge to your advantage, is it part of the game or an exploit?
If EA had of fixed, or at least acknowledged the problem then I would consider it an exploit, since they did not, (in fact they hid it by not allowing 3rd person view as infantry), then it must have been part of the game or not considered a problem, therefore no exploit.
There are many more exploitive tricks for BF1942, many but not all have to do with the Point of view error and ways to “take advantage” of “features”. I think that finding the “tricks” are often the difference between the elite and the good players (noobs are noobs, good for target practice)
In Battlefield 2 there are more than a few exploits, but again I think that the definition may be a little loose, and anyone that does not exploit any advantage they have is not ever going to be a great player, but if I find it and consider it an exploit you find out about it here
The Smart Chopper Whore: (non-exploitive way to fly) Fair/Smart = 3 engineers keeping the ship alive with wrenches under fire. I strongly believe that if you have a dedicated repair team doing nothing but wrenching, that it should take a team of equal size to take out the chopper. This “invincible team” is fair, and well within game rules. In my opinion it forces the opposition to work together as a team, or get owned. That said a tank should drop a chopper with one shot. Also there should be a point beyond which the chopper cannot be repaired without landing it.
Well I’m off to look for new ways to kill you before you kill me. Remember we are all just playing a massive game of rock, paper, scissors, and having the right tool for the job is the key.
So… Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight (unless you brought a medic, and the gunner is a buddy - You Exploitve Whore you! ) |
