Battlefield 2 patch v1.03 Uncovered |

Well now that I’ve had a chance to play Battlefield 2 with the new patch installed I would have to say that many of the 141 fixes must have been done invisibly or not at all while others repaired have improved game play at the very least.
First let me say that I liked Battlefield 2 right from the get go, even with the numerous errors and oversights EA left in the game at release I still found myself having a great deal of fun, and enjoy the team play that can evolve on a good server with good people. I get a great deal of pleasure playing with friends as a squad and working together to take or hold positions.
On to the latest patch.
New FeaturesWake Island: Good map and fun to play. I liked this map on the previous incarnation of Battlefield 1942 and Desert Combat. For sure EA could have made more changes to the Wake map, but would that have made it better? I doubt it. I for one like the familiar surroundings and the feeling that I know where I am and what is around the bend or over the hill. If the map were to be changed too much then it might be another great map, but it would no longer be Wake Island.
Server Favorites / History The Browser now includes a way to save favorite servers as well as keeping track of the last 20 servers that were played on. Both features are very useful and work well. The favorite servers can be added either in the server browser or during game play via the in-game server info (press TAB to access)
New Login Welcome screen We’ll see how useful this is, I see it as a potential assect or liability depending on how EA decides to use it. Asset would be to distribute relevant BF2 information. Liability would be to be served up more advertisements, or to be solicited to opt-in to mailing lists and the like.
Statistic Compare feature You can now compare your playing statistics with your friends and enemies. Not too useful but, a fun feature for all you start whores. (who me…)
Nickname Prefix Now you can add a six character prefix to your game name without changing your account game name and having to start you rank fromg scratch. Being a Clan Man myself I think this is a good improvement, all team members wearing a clan tag looks good and brings the squad together in the eyes of the enemy. As I stated before I think the team play aspect is one of the strong points of this game and being able to identify Clan members is helpful both in identifying Clan mates and sizing up enemy. I find the quality of play is greatly increased if playing on a server with groups of people wearing the same clan tags. Playing on a server with no teamwork on the opposing side is boring IMHO.
Improvements to in-game HUD / Map All changes here are good and very useful. Since they are detailed and self explanatory I will not go into anymore detail, but I will reinforce the obvious fact that those that use the mini-map and HUD properly will defiantly have an advantage over those that do not.
* The viewable area of the spawn menu / commander map is now scaled based on the out-of-bounds area so that only the playable area takes up the majority of viewable map space. * The names of CPs are now displayed on the spawn menu / commander map and minimap * The minimap zoom level now changes dynamically depending on the type of vehicle you are in. If you zoom in or out manually, that zoom level is remembered for that vehicle type next time you use it. * The names of players in your vehicle are displayed in the HUD when someone enters the vehicle or switches positions. * There is a new element in vehicle HUDs that displays the reload time for countermeasures (smoke and flares). * Flags for each team are now displayed below their ticket count on the minimap to make it easier to tell what team you are assigned to.
Reserve Slots You can now reserve slots on your server for members. See Change log for details.
Mod Support See Change log for details.
Game play ChangesRanking, promotions, ribbons, badges and the like have all had their values reduced. For example I was at 10600gp with a rank of Corporal, I received 3 promotions and weapons upgrades as well as a badge during my first few minutes of game play with patch 1.03
You have to get out of vehicles as only one player will be able to change the flags from inside the vehicle. This will help get rid of the chopper whores who fly from flag to flag taking flags with impunity under patch 1.02
Commanders don’t get a TK for artillery fire. This is good for the most part, but I would have rather seen the idiot that runs into arty get the TK. I think that running into artillery is the same as dropping a grenade at your feet or other stupid ways to get one’s self killed. By not punishing the stupidity of running into the artillery the noobs and idiots will never learn and will like initiate kick votes against the commander(s).
Commander dropped Supplies show up on the HUD with an icon and on the mini-map. (very helpful)
Auto team balance no longer moves players to the other team if they are a team commander or a squad leader. I was never moved in the previous versions once I was in a squad or commander, so I have not noticed one way or the other on this one.
The wrench repair rate on helicopters has been decreased. I’ll be testing this out later to see how effective the wrenches are in the choppers. Another anti-whore adjustment that was needed, hopefully a couple or 3 ground troops will stand a change vs. a chopper squad.
You now receive 1 support point for destroying an enemy commander's artillery, UAV or Radar station, but do we also receive a point for fixing them?
If you have received a point for healing, repairing, or re-supplying a teammate, you will not receive another point from them for the same action for a set period of time. This also is aimed at the Stat-Whores and Stat-Padding players that really bring nothing to the game or the quality of the game playing experience. The Bug FixesWell the bug fix list is long, and probably not totally complete, but EA has addressed many of the bugs. The main ones as far as I’m concerned have only been partially addressed, but hey, the game had so many bugs and problems that I would have been amazed if EA had of nailed them all. The bugs that I found most requiring attention have been listed as patched, such as the problem of being killed very easy if a friendly vehicle touched you, or if you fell off riding a tank for instance. This problem now is much less of a problem, and you can even hitch a ride by jumping on a tank now.
Other problems such as the low power of vehicles climbing hills is listed at improved, but I don’t see it. The hummers still drop down a gear or two climbing the slightest incline, it’s as thought there is no momentum used in the calculations, or maybe the formula used to reduce speed is not inline with the grade of the hill. Whatever it is, it’s very annoying and you would have thought a very easy fix.
Equally frustrating is the low power of the weapons, especially the AT missiles. The only think they take out with one hit is a hummer or other very weakly armored vehicles. I’ve yet to see a take go down with less than 3 AT missiles into him. Choppers are equally armored as the tanks when it comes to the AT missle. One would think that just one anti-tank missile hitting a chopper would drop it.
The bug EA removed by increasing the armor on the wheels of jets and choppers was a move in the wrong direction if you ask me. I think that every vehicle should have a sweet spot where a well placed shot with the right weapon would have a good chance at total destruction. For instance would a missile hitting the tail or propeller of a chopper not do such an incredible amount of damage that at best it would be forced to do an emergency landing, (or more likely a crash landing)
Well as I play more, I’ll write more. I’ll be looking for ways to get an advantage verses the enemy and will report as they are found. If you have a tip, trick, hack, or other interesting bit of Battlefield 2 information please drop me a line. {moscomment} |
