Now that Battlefield 2 has been out for a couple of weeks I thought I would share my thoughts. Overall I like it a ton, the maps are excellent, and it is filled with the fun “Battlefield Moments” that made the original game Battlefield 1942 great, and the mod “Desert Combat” even better. All while
Choppers in Battlefield 2 - Exploit or Smart Game play still having enough realism to make you feel like you are really could be surrounded by enemy fire or getting pounded by the artillery (turn up the volume if you are not sure).
As with most new releases there are loads of problems, but this game seems to have more than it’s fair share, and some of the problems are such that it makes one wonder how they could possibly have been missed, messed up, or omitted completely. The in game browser for instance is pathetic; being a multi-player online game fanatic I could not believe how far short of useful EA Games was able to make the browser. EA totally missed the boat with the browser, here they are with an excellent game designed for team play, but they do not give you any way for you or your buddies to track what server each other are in, and if that’s not a big enough problem EA seems to have forgotten to give the user any way of identifying the server or server IP they currently are playing in so you could at least message your buddies and give them the games IP so the “team” could play on the same server
This Browser problem is to be corrected in the first patch from EA scheduled for release less than one month after the games initial release, can you say “Doh!!”. I’ll keep my fingers crossed till I see it.
Although I have not spent a great deal of time in any vehicle, the land vehicles are much better handling, many can turn on a dime and general are fun to drive. My personal favorite (no surprise to those who know me) is the Desert Storm Buggy. The Buggy is a blast to rip around in, tires spinning, getting up on two wheels, or jumping off of the many ramps, it’s all good. For the most part the damage you receive is reasonable when taking hard falls or hitting thinks like walls. Damage given to vehicles while driving also seems much improved over “Desert Combat”, no more hitting a bump in a Hummer and exploding. Greatly improved is the ability to drive in shallow water, you no longer start taking damage as soon as your tires hit the water, in fact in many cases you can make it across short expanses of deeper water without making your vehicle unusable.
The biggest complaint I have about the vehicles is that many are way too under powered, really reducing the usefulness of certain vehicles. Come on now! I dune buggy or Hummer better be able to climb a small hill at full speed without loosing all momentum.
The Jets look good, I have no comment of the jets as I have not flown them yet, but they look great, and in the hands of a good pilot are deadly both to air and ground targets.
The choppers are loads of fun and easier to fly than in the original “Desert Combat”. The choppers have more positions than in the previous incarnation of BF1942 DC Mod, up to six in the transport choppers. Like in the passenger seats of the land vehicles you can also use your weapons in the choppers. The big choppers are formidable to say the least with the correct selection of classes filling the seats they can become a flying fortress almost impossible to take down without concentrated attack. Some people think the flying fortress is an exploit, but I disagree as there is always a way to take it down with team work. In my opinion reason it’s so hard to destroy is that you have six people working as a team in the chopper to keep it flying, armed, and in good repair, so it only stands to reason that it would require a similar amount of manpower or machine power to counter it.
Playing infantry is fun as it was in Battlefield 1942, only now you have more choices more weapons, and even a few new moves. The hit indicators and damage that you receive seem to be a bit erratic, but works fairly well, another issue I hope gets addressed in the near future.
Chopper vs APC - I'd rather be the hammer than the nail! I find that in Battlefield 2 you have to be much more cautious when moving around the map, and there is a definite advantage to being in a squad. Not only can you spawn on your squad leader, saving a lot of time running around to get back in your squad when killed, but chances are that you’ll have a medic in your squad capable of “Reviving” you with a defibrillator so you will be able to stay in the action longer and get a better kill to death ratio.
The squads and commander in battlefield 2 are what will either make or break your team when it comes to winning a match. If you have good squads, commander, and team work your team will help win most any match. The squad will call for eyes in the sky (UAV) and when the commander obliges the squad will be shown the positions of all troops in the immediate area, and if this were not enough the satellite scan the commander has available covers the entire map every few minutes making it impossible for snipers to hide or for sneak attacks to be truly effective. Wise use of the radar combined with an astute commander and squad leaders will warn players of impending attacks and danger, as well as give the position of ambushes. When the team works together as a unit then they will become stronger than the sum or their individual parts.
The Commander’s artillery fire can be one of the most effective weapons in the game if used properly and carefully, or if fired at the wrong time it can get the commander kicked from a server for team killing with just once shot. I’ve seen entire squads killed at a time with the artillery, and once it’s on it’s way there no calling it back or redirecting it, so watch out!. A good commander can often turn the balance of a game, the same is true of a bad commander, or a commander that only takes the command position for the extra ranking points and does not direct the battle, clear the way for squads with artillery, and send those needed supply drops at crucial times.
I give the game an 8 out of 10 overall fun and play, and a must buy for anyone that likes first person shooters. I give it 5 out of 10 for the browser, interface, and numerous other problems that should have been corrected before going "Gold".
I give EA a swift kick in the ass for releasing a game without completely testing/finishing some of the basic parts.
